Northland Hearing Centers, Inc. (“Northland”), and our local clinics, care about all of our patients and respects their privacy. Starkey Hearing Technologies, Inc. (“Starkey”), one of our suppliers of hearing devices and products, experienced a data-security matter in 2019 that made is possible for third parties to see information related to some of our patients.
Between May 31 and June 6, eight Starkey employees’ e-mails were accessed by an unauthorized party. Some of those e-mails or their attachments contained the names of Northland patients. In some instances, the e-mails and/or attachments, included hearing-aid serial numbers or a generic description of the device type. Starkey advised us of the incident, and we took all steps to notify our affected patients of the incident directly. Unfortunately, for a small number of our Northland patients, we did not have sufficient or current information to allow us to contact the patient directly.
Starkey has assured us that this incident did not involve the release of sensitive data (e.g., Social Security numbers, credit-card numbers, other financial information, or passwords). Because the incident did not involve the type of information that is required for identity or monetary theft, we do not anticipate any risk to our clinics or patients as a result of the incident.
Starkey has assured us that they have taken steps to prevent this type of event from occurring in the future. Starkey has provided a hotline for all patients potentially impacted by the incident including our Northland patients. If you have not been directly notified by Northland or your clinic and have any questions or would like to know if you are directly affected, please contact Starkey at the hotline number: 1-877-503-2746.
In closing, Northland, our clinics, and Starkey apologize for any inconvenience. We appreciate your business and look forward to serving you for years to come.
